Turon Recipe
Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 15 mins | Yield: 6 pieces
Turon is a very simple dish that's essentially a sweet version of the lumpia or the Filipino egg roll. It uses only three ingredients and takes very little time to make!
It's a common street food in the Philippines that's more of an afternoon snack than a dessert. But when I moved to the States, I often found it a staple as an easy dessert at parties hosted by Filipino family friends. This is my easy, less sugary version. I like to eat it right after frying, but if you must store leftovers, it's best to reheat in a toaster oven to keep the crunch.
Ingredients
· 6 spring roll wrappers (I use TYJ Spring Roll Pastry commonly found at Asian grocers)
· 6 teaspoons brown sugar
· 3 Thai bananas, cut lengthwise to make 6 pieces
Instructions
Using one wrapper at a time, turn the wrapper so it forms a diamond on a flat surface.
Place one half of a banana and put 1 tsp of brown sugar on top of the banana.
To fold, I like to fold over the bottom corner over the banana, roll until you are about halfway up, then tuck in the sides to make an 'envelope'. (See pic above).
Continue rolling until a small tip at the top of the wrapper is left, making sure to roll tightly. To seal the roll, use tap water to slightly dampen the tip before sealing. Repeat for the remaining 5 rolls.
Heat a frying pan over medium heat, using enough oil to cover about 1/2 inch of the pan. (Use light oil like vegetable oil).
Place the rolls into the pan to start frying, seal side down. Make sure to flip the rolls once each side is golden brown.
Some of the sugar in the rolls will escape from the rolls, which I like to use as 'caramel' on the outside.
Serve warm. Enjoy!
